Introduction
The Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) is a free download from Microsoft. It can be used as the source for creating a VistaPE CD using WinBuilder if you don't have a standard Vista DVD. It must also be installed if you want to use Mustang's "Add Drivers" WinBuilder script.
Step 1 - Download the Windows AIK
This is a very large download (1.7GB). A broadband (high-speed) internet connection is highly recomended.
Click on the link above and then click on the Continue button to start the download process.
Microsoft will verify that your copy of Windows is activated and genuine. You may need to install an ActiveX control to complete this procedure. Follow the instructions as prompted by the website.

Once the validation is complete, click the Download button to begin downloading the file.

Save the file to a known location (Downloads, for example) for easy access later.
Step 2 - Create the Windows AIK DVD
Once the WAIK file is downloaded, you'll need to burn it to a DVD. The file is in a .img format. Many burning programs like MagicISO, WinISO, etc. can handle the .img format. If you don't have a program that will handle it, you can download a free program called ImgBurnImgBurn will burn the .img file directly to a DVD.

Step 3 - Install the Windows AIK
Insert the WAIK DVD. It should AutoPlay or pop-up an AutoPlay selection window.
If the DVD does not AutoPlay, browse to the DVD using My Computer and run the STARTCD.EXEprogram.
The AutoPlay selection box in Vista is shown below. If displayed, click on the Run StartCD.exe option.

If running Vista with UAC turned on (the default), click Continue on the UAC pop-up to allow the program to run.

The main installation window should now display. Select the Windows AIK Setup option to begin the installation.

If installing the WAIK in Windows XP, you may need to install the .NET Framework 2.0 Setup and theMSXML 6.0 Setup before the WAIK will install. Detailed instructions can be found here.
Click the Next button.

Select the Agree option and click the Next button.

Choose the installation folder, select the Everyone option and then click the Next button
It is highly recommended that you keep the default installation folder when installing the WAIK.

Click the Next button to begin the installation.

Wait for the installation to complete. This may take several minutes.

Once the installation is complete, click the Close button.

Select Exit from the DVD installer.

If you want to browse to the installation folder, you should see the WAIK files.
